Voice filters on TryToAct: change your voice while you dub

A giant's deep voice, a squeaky cartoon voice or a voice on the other end of the line: you can now transform your voice while you dub, solo or multiplayer. Here's how it works.

A dozen new voices for your dubs

Ever wanted to dub a giant, an action-movie villain or someone calling from the other side of the world? Now you can, without straining your vocal cords: TryToAct has voice filters right on the recording screen.

Deep and Phone came first; there are now twelve filters, on top of your natural voice:

• Deep: your voice drops by about 8 semitones, with a little extra bass. Perfect for giants, villains or the overly serious boss.

• Chipmunk: a tiny squeaky cartoon voice, for mice, babies and hyperactive sidekicks.

• Monster: a full octave down, roughed up, past deep and into something not quite human.

• Robot and Alien: a cold metal machine voice, or one from another planet.

• Phone and Megaphone: your voice down a real phone line, filtered and slightly distorted, or through a bullhorn in the middle of the street. Ideal for phone calls, walkie-talkies and mysterious messages.

• Echo, Cathedral and Cave: your voice bouncing back from afar, under a huge stone vault or deep inside a dark cavern.

• Choir and Underwater: a whole crowd talking with you, or your head under water.

• None: your voice as it is, no effect. That's the default.

How do I pick a filter?

You choose on the recording screen, solo and online. Just below the mic volume setting, you'll find a "Voice filter" row with all the options. Click the one you like, then start your take as usual.

Your choice is saved to your profile: if you love the deep voice, it stays selected for your next games until you change it.

What happens when you change filters after a take

The filter is applied the moment your take ends. During the countdown and the recording, the selector is locked: no changing your mind halfway through a line.

If you already have a take and pick another filter, the button turns orange and says "Not on this take yet". Just click "Re-record" to redo the line with the new filter.

Everyone hears the same thing

Once your take is done, the filtered version is the one used everywhere: in playback, in your dub's export and on your partners' screens in multiplayer. No nasty surprises: what you hear is exactly what everyone else will hear.

Another important detail: your voice stays perfectly in sync with the scene. The filter doesn't shift your take, so your lines still land right on time.

Our ideas to make the most of them

Filters open up plenty of possibilities, especially at a party with friends. A few ideas to get started:

• Dub a legendary villain with the deep voice, and keep your normal voice for the hero.

• Play every phone-call scene with the Phone filter, for an instant effect.

• Start an online game where each player picks a different filter, and see who commits to their character best.

• Redo a scene you know by heart with an unexpected filter, for a completely offbeat result.

Frequently asked questions

Are voice filters free?

Yes, filters are available to every player, for free, solo and multiplayer.

Can I change filters for just one line?

Yes. Pick the filter before you start your take: it applies to that take only. You can switch between lines if you want to play different characters.

I changed filters but my take sounds the same. Is that normal?

Yes: the filter is applied when the recording ends. A take you already made keeps the filter it was recorded with. Click "Re-record" to hear it with the new one.

Will more filters be added?

Deep and Phone were the first two, and there are twelve now. If you have an idea for a voice you'd like to see, send it our way.
