The best meme sounds to imitate with friends (and how to nail them)

Everyone can do "Bruh". Nailing Plankton's "Aughhhhh" or the Clash Royale King's laugh is another story. We went through the sounds in TryToAct's Battle mode to pick the funniest meme sounds to imitate with friends, each with a tip to score points.

In short

The funniest meme sounds to imitate are short (1 to 4 seconds), have a strong shape (a hit, a rise, a crash) and get a laugh when you miss them: "Bruh", the Minecraft "Oof", "Emotional Damage", Plankton's "Aughhhhh", Michael Jackson's "Hee hee", King Boo's laugh or the Clash Royale King's reactions. You can imitate sounds like these for free in TryToAct's Battle mode, where four judges score your impression out of 10.

What makes a good sound to imitate

A good meme sound has three qualities: it's short, it has a recognizable shape (it starts loud, rises or collapses) and it's doable with a human mouth. That's also what our judges look at: the shape of the sound, its loudness and its length, not how close it is to your voice (here's how they score).

5 tips to score points

• Wear headphones so the original sound doesn't leak back into your mic.

• Match the length. An "Aughhhhh" that's too short or a "Bruh" that's too long loses points, even when it's well imitated.

• Copy the attack. The judges notice the moment the sound kicks in.

• Forget about your voice. A deep voice can nail a high sound just fine: the shape is what counts.

• Listen to the whole sound before you play. You only get one take.

Why not make your own pack?

Your Discord server's inside jokes, your friend group's legendary lines: you can turn them into a pack of 5 to 15 sounds of up to 3 seconds each and publish it in a few minutes. Follow our guide to making a sound pack.

Frequently asked questions

TryToAct's Battle mode has packs of meme sounds you can play for free in your browser. You can also build your own pack from your audio or video files.

What is the easiest meme sound to imitate?

"Bruh": a single low, flat syllable of about a second and a half. The hardest to hold is Plankton's "Aughhhhh", which lasts almost five seconds.

Do I need the same voice to pull off an impression?

No. In Battle mode, the score compares the shape of the sound, its loudness and its length, not the tone or pitch of your voice.
