Free online voice-imitation game

You hear a sound, you mimic it into your mic, the jury scores you. TryToAct’s Battle mode is a free voice-imitation game that you play right in your browser, solo or with up to 12 players.

The idea: one sound, one take, one score

A Battle game is played in rounds. Each round, the whole room listens to the same short sound: a meme, a movie line, a TV jingle, a video-game sound effect or an animal call. Each player then mimics it into their mic, in a single take that lasts as long as the original sound.

Once the takes are recorded, the imitations are replayed one by one on the theatre stage, in front of the whole room. The jury holds up its scores after each turn, and the game’s ranking reshuffles at the end of the round.

How the score is worked out

Your take is compared with the original sound on three criteria, each scored out of 100: timbre (the colour of the sound, and its melody when the original has one), rhythm (the attacks, the rises, the silences) and length. The three combine into a score out of 100.

The analysis isn’t looking for an exact copy: a higher or lower voice still scores close if it starts, swells and stops like the original. An “aaa-OOO” that changes vowel at the right moment counts for more than hitting the right pitch.

The score then goes before a jury of four judges, who each give a mark out of 10. The average of their marks makes your points for the round, and points add up over the whole game. The judges’ temperaments are drawn at random each round and announced before the sound plays:

  • Fair: scores what they hear.
  • Strict: takes off 2 points.
  • Generous: adds 2 points.
  • Hard of hearing: mostly listens to the rhythm.
  • Stickler: mostly listens to the length.
  • Connoisseur: mostly listens to the timbre.
  • Moody: scores more or less at random.

Sound packs

Sounds come in packs, sorted by theme: Memes, Movies, TV, Gaming, Animals. Before starting the game, the room’s host ticks up to three packs and chooses the number of rounds, from 1 to 20 (5 by default). Library sounds last up to 15 seconds.

Make your own sound pack

Battle Studio is where you build a pack from your own sounds: import them, trim each one to between 0.8 and 3 seconds, then put 5 to 15 of them together. A short sound keeps the game moving, even in a full room.

A pack submitted to the public library is listened to and approved before it’s published. Only use sounds you’re allowed to share.

Play with friends or strangers

A Battle room holds up to 12 players. Create one, share its five-character invite code and start the game once everyone has a seat. You can also join a public game to play with other players online.

You need a mic: the one on a phone, a computer or a headset will do. Your browser asks for permission when the game starts.

Coming from Mimic Party?

Mimic Party is a paid game by FoliesApp, available on Steam and mobile, in which you imitate sounds to score points. TryToAct’s Battle mode starts from the same idea, with a few differences: it’s free, it runs in your browser with nothing to download or install, and its sound packs can be made by players.

TryToAct is not affiliated with FoliesApp.

Frequently asked questions

Is the voice-imitation game free?

Yes. Battle mode is free to play in your browser, with no subscription or download. Optional coin purchases exist for some in-game items; you don’t need them to play.

How many players can play together?

Up to 12 players in the same Battle room. Share the invite code or join a public game.

How is an imitation scored?

The analysis compares your take with the original on timbre, rhythm and length, each scored out of 100. Four judges turn that score into marks out of 10, depending on their temperament that round, and their average gives your points.

Do I need to be good at impressions to win?

No. The pitch of your voice matters little: what scores points is starting, rising and stopping like the original sound, and getting the length right.

How long does a sound last?

Up to 15 seconds for library sounds, and between 0.8 and 3 seconds for sounds in a pack made by a player.

Is it a free alternative to Mimic Party?

Battle mode takes the idea of imitating a sound to get scored and makes it free and playable in your browser. TryToAct is not affiliated with FoliesApp, the publisher of Mimic Party.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in modern browsers, on desktop and mobile alike. You just need a mic.
