Online dubbing game: how it works
How dubbing works on TryToAct: pick a scene, record your voice over it, play alone or with friends, and turn your own videos into packs.
What is an online dubbing game?
A dubbing game is karaoke for movies: a scene from a film, a TV show or an anime plays in front of you with the original sound muted, and your voice replaces the actors’. You read the lines on screen (or make them up), speak into your mic, and at the end the game lays your voice back over the original picture.
On TryToAct, all of this runs in your browser, with nothing to install. Import a pack or open your own creations from “Solo dubbing”, then record, listen to the result, and share it or play again straight away.
Three ways to play
TryToAct offers three ways to play, all from the home page.
- Solo: you dub a scene at your own pace, alone in front of the screen, to practise or just for a laugh.
- Multiplayer: up to 4 players in co-op join the same lobby and each dub their own character without hearing one another, so the big reveal is rarely what anyone expected. In VS, up to 12 players dub the same scene and compare their versions.
- Creator mode: you import your own video and turn it into a pack that the community can then dub in turn.

How a game plays out
Once you have picked a scene, the video starts with the original sound muted. You speak into your mic while the picture rolls, like an actor performing to playback. When the clip ends, your voice is automatically synced with the picture and played back over it.
You can listen to the result again, or start over if a line got away from you. The arrow keys also shift the recording by one second (five with Shift), handy for fixing a slight offset without redoing everything.

Recording your voice: what you need
All you need is a mic: the one in your computer or phone does the job perfectly well, no special gear required. The game works in any modern browser, on desktop and mobile alike, and simply asks for permission to use the mic the first time you play.
Nothing you record is sent anywhere without your say-so: you decide whether to keep your creation, export it or share it.
